The General Chemistry Laboratory is arranged to allow 25 students to conduct experiments simultaneously and is located on Floor B2.
The laboratory consists of three sections:
In the first section, there is a fume hood, high-temperature furnace, water distillation systems, stirrers with different properties and speeds, two ovens, and a microwave oven.
The second section includes laboratory benches aligned along the walls, glassware cabinets, and faucet-sink systems. These benches are allocated for students to perform experiments. In this section, computers are placed on a fixed pentagon-shaped table. These computers are equipped with licensed simulation software related to chemistry experiments. Especially undergraduate students can simulate the experiments they perform in the laboratory in a virtual environment and compare experimental results with virtual outcomes. Moreover, nuclear chemistry experiments, which cannot be conducted in the laboratory, can also be studied via virtual simulations.
In the third section, the following equipment is available:
Rotary evaporator, JENCO Model 6307 pH meter–conductometer, Hittorf voltameter, PARR bomb calorimeter, Brookfield viscometer, ABBE refractometer, UV/Visible Spectrometer, and precision balances.
During the 2010–2011 academic year, the laboratory acquired the Mettler Toledo S80-K SevenMulti dual ion-selective pH meter–conductometer, enabling the standard determination of calcium, sulfate, sulfide, chloride, nitrate, and cyanide in soil and water, which is essential in ground studies. The devices in this section are used for undergraduate and graduate research, project studies, and industrial services.
Additionally, this section also facilitates experimental studies for high school students who wish to conduct research for participation in scientific project competitions.
A detailed list of the laboratory equipment is provided in Table 1, and a visual representation of the laboratory is presented below.
