General Chemistry Laboratory

The General Chemistry Laboratory, which carries out its activities within the Department of Civil Engineering, is located on floor B2. The General Chemistry Laboratory is designed in such a way that 25 students can conduct experiments at the same time. In the first part of the General Chemistry Laboratory, which consists of three parts in total, there is a fume cupboard, high-temperature oven, water distilling systems, mixers in different specifications and revolutions, two stoves and a microwave oven.

In the second part, there are laboratory benches, glassware cabinets as well as faucet and basin systems. The benches are reserved for students to conduct experiments. In the second part, there are computers placed on a fixed table in a pentagonal form. Simulation software of chemical experiments is installed on these computers. Undergraduate students, especially, can simulate the experiments they conducted in the Laboratory and compare the experimental results with the results of the virtual experiments.

The third part includes a rotary evaporator, conductometer, Hittorf voltammetry, PARR calorimeter bomb, Brookfield viscometer, ABBE refractometer, pH meter, and precision scales. The devices in this part are used in research and project studies at undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, this part allows students to conduct experimental studies to participate in scientific project competitions.

Students in the Departments of Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Industrial Engineering, are divided into groups of 20 within the scope of the General Chemistry course held in the Chemistry Lab and 20 experiments are conducted in four or five different laboratory hours in one period. The activities conducted within the Laboratory in accordance with the General Chemistry course continue throughout the year.

The Chemistry Laboratory also serves the Department of Physics and the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. Furthermore, our Department supports the students in completing their chemistry laboratory training by assigning Research Assistants in all laboratory processes. In the Chemistry Laboratory, Industrial Services are given to the researchers, institutions, and organizations of other universities.
